In Summary

The utility says supply has resumed in Buruburu, Dandora, Kariobangi and parts of Mathare, while repair teams continue working on distribution lines in Kiambiu and Korogocho to fully stabilise services.

Nairobi Water on Monday restored water supply to several estates after repairing a major transmission pipeline along Outering Road damaged by recent floods.

The utility says supply has resumed in Buruburu, Dandora, Kariobangi and parts of Mathare, while repair teams continue working on distribution lines in Kiambiu and Korogocho to fully stabilise services.

Residents in these areas had experienced supply interruptions after floodwaters damaged the critical transmission line.

The pipeline serves as an important component of Nairobi’s water distribution network, delivering water to several densely populated residential areas in the eastern part of the city.

Engineers say the recent flooding placed significant strain on infrastructure across Nairobi, with roads, drainage systems and water pipelines among the facilities affected by the heavy rains.

Nairobi Water said its technical teams worked around the clock to repair the damaged transmission line and restore supply as quickly as possible.

“We are pleased to announce that the major transmission pipeline along Outering Road, which was damaged by recent floods, has now been fully repaired and restored,” the company said in an update.

While water supply has resumed in most of the affected areas, the utility company said repair teams are still working on additional infrastructure to ensure full service restoration.

Current efforts are focused on repairing distribution lines serving Kiambiu and Korogocho, two areas that remain partially affected by the earlier damage.

According to Nairobi Water, progress on those repairs is advancing steadily, and engineers aim to restore full supply to the remaining neighbourhoods as soon as possible.

“Our teams have now shifted focus to ongoing repairs on the distribution lines serving Kiambiu and Korogocho,” the company said. “Works are progressing well, and we aim to restore full supply to these areas as soon as possible.”

The restoration of water supply comes at a time when Nairobi has been experiencing heavy rains and flooding that have disrupted essential services across the city.

In addition to damaging water infrastructure, the floods have also affected roads, drainage systems and homes in several informal settlements and low-lying areas.

Urban infrastructure experts say that ageing pipelines combined with extreme weather events can place significant pressure on water systems, particularly in rapidly growing cities.

Nairobi Water acknowledged the inconvenience caused by the disruptions and thanked residents for their patience during the repair process.

“We appreciate your patience and understanding as our dedicated teams work towards completing these repairs,” the company said.

For many residents in affected areas, the restoration of water services is expected to ease the strain caused by the temporary shortages.

Access to reliable water supply is essential for households, schools, hospitals and businesses, particularly in densely populated neighbourhoods where water demand is high.

City authorities have in recent years been working to upgrade Nairobi’s water infrastructure to improve reliability and reduce disruptions caused by leaks, ageing pipes and extreme weather events.

However, experts note that continued investment will be necessary to strengthen the resilience of water systems in the face of increasing climate-related challenges.

As repair work continues in the remaining affected areas, Nairobi Water says it remains committed to restoring normal supply across the entire network and ensuring that residents receive water according to the established distribution schedule.

The company added that updates will be provided as engineers complete the remaining repairs and fully stabilise water supply across the eastern parts of the city.
